Thai Medicine Immersion Weekend at Om Oasis Retreat Center in Aptos CA

You are invited to join us for a very special residential weekend retreat where we will immerse ourselves together in the study of traditional Thai medicine as it has historically been practiced, in a natural forest setting at Om Retreat Center, a beautiful sanctuary in the redwoods of northern California near Santa Cruz offering nature, swimming pool, hot tubs. and herbal sauna..

om oasis 2.jpeg

This course will integrate Thai medical theory in lecture, conversation and hands-on experiential application to bodywork and self care.  We will also bring our attention to the kitchen as we dine together and examine how our wise choice of foods can help bring us back into balance.  In this way we will learn how everything we do from massage to meditation, from exercising to eating dinner, is all rooted in the elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space through the lens of the Thai medical system.

In this Thai medicine sampler held in the beautiful Om Oasis retreat center amidst the coastal Redwood forest of northern California, we shall:

• Learn what traditional Thai medicine is, where it comes from, and what it encompasses.

• Learn a set of Thai bodywork techniques for alleviating pain and tension in the neck and shoulders.

• Participate in a daily Thai healing arts traditional ceremony.

• Learn range of motion exercises and self massage from the ancient Thai self care system, reusi da ton.

• Do Thai element meditations.

• Eat healthy meals together while discussing how the foods we eat affect our elemental balance.

• Come to understand ourselves and each other through a holistic healing system that is anchored in the Buddhist practices of goodwill, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.

This one day workshop focuses on caring for women during the postpartum time.  It is open to massage therapists and also to pregnant women who would like to plan for how to best care for themselves after giving birth.

In this course we will cover nourishment, warmth and rest for women in a depleted state, belly binding to help support healing of organs, abdomen, and pelvic floor, as well as to prevent postpartum incontinence, and herbs for the postpartum time.

Gaan Kruut: Thai Medical Scraping

scraping tools.jpg
150.00

Dates TBA

One Day Mini workshop. Scraping, known in China as Gua Sha, commonly called "coining" in Vietnam, and recently adapted by western physical therapists and chiropractors under the names ASTYM® and Graston®, is an ancient folk medicine technique that can release adhesions and spasms, boost the body's immune system to fight off illness, release excess heat, and remove toxins.

Scraping is a powerfully effective technique that can be used by anyone for household healing without expensive certifications and tools.  It is ancient kitchen medicine that works and can be easily integrated into any healing arts practice, or simply for self care and care of family.  While scraping is found in many traditional healing systems this course will use Thai medical theory as the lens through which we encounter it.

Thai Medical Theory for Bodyworkers Online Course (distance learning)

Thai Medical Theory for Bodyworkers Online Course (distance learning)

This course is offered twice a year, once in the fall, and once in the spring.  Each time it comes around a wonderful global community of dedicated Thai massage practitioners forms around a shared love of truly in-depth learning.  Students who complete this course are invited to join an ongoing online study group led by Nephyr, such that the exchange of knowledge and the community need not end.

In these ten weeks we will dive into the deep sea of Thai medical theory, with a focus on how it applies to Thai bodywork. Information provided is based on true Thai medical theory as it stands on its own and does not overlay Indian or Chinese theory on Thai techniques, although it will reference when these cultures have been inclusive in the evolution of Thai theory.

This is a serious (and fun!) course and students are expected to complete weekly homework assignments and quizzes, and to pass a written final exam. Five to Ten hours per week should be reserved for watching online lessons, doing assignments, studying, keeping up with the online questions and answers, and taking quizzes if you are a moderate to quick learner, and 7 to 15 hours per week should be set aside if you know that you do best with extra study time. While some weeks will be less learning intensive than others, please go into this class expecting to put in serious participation time.

Certificates will only be given to those who pass the course. Grading is based on participation, completing the quizzes, and passing the final exam. But don’t fret, so long as you are seriously trying, all who struggle will be given much help and guidance!  All who successfully complete this course and demonstrate strong participation, will be invited to join our ongoing study group forum.

Class is divided into 8 lesson modules, most of which are one week long, and two that are a bit longer, plus one review week before the final exam. Each week will have a lecture video lesson, homework assignment and quiz.

This course takes place on a forum, where lessons and assignments are posted each week, and students interact with one another as well as with their instructor, Nephyr Jacobsen. Nephyr is present daily, with all questions being answered within a 24 hour period. This class forms a strong online community, bringing together Thai bodywork/medicine lovers from around the world.

You do not need to watch the lessons at a particular time. This course generally has students living in a wide variety of time zones. Participation is done on your own schedule so long as you get the quiz done by the end of the week.
