Theravada Buddhism Classes

To register for all classes please click here

Theravada Buddhism is one branch of traditional Thai medicine and in fact, traditional Thai medicine is Buddhist medicine, with various concepts from Buddhism woven into the fabric of the medical theory. Traditionally, Theravada Buddhism never charges money for spiritual education, hence the only fees you will find with any of our Buddhist classes are actual cost of operation, any copyright or licensing fees, and such fees as those incurred with photocopying and shipping materials. All of our classes are non-dogmatic and welcome participants from any spiritual or religious path .
All Thai massage classes honor the inherent presense of Buddhism in Thai healing. Our Thai Massage Level I class gives a brief overview of Buddhism as it relates to Thai healing, and all massage classes begin and end with Thai Buddhist ceremony as is done in Thai massage classes in Thailand.

Buddhist Medicine Conference Call Seminar
With Pierce Salguero
In this conference-call seminar historian and anthropologist Pierce Salguero will introduce participants to his research in Buddhist medicine. We will begin with an overview of Buddhist medicine in the earliest Indian tradition, and then proceed to discuss the spread of Buddhist medicine throughout Asia and Eventually to the West. The chief focus of the class will be on the medicial texts present in the Chinese Tripitaka, which are a treasure trove of medical knowledge preserved from ancient and medieval India. Pierce will walk participants through this material, discussing individual texts and their contents. Topics to be discussed include:

-the role of Buddhism in crosscultural exchange of medicine
-basic Buddhist medical theories
-the relationship between Buddhist medicine, Ayurveda, and Chinese medicine
-Buddhist medical practices relevant to contemporary practitioners

In this class we will gather at The Naga Center to participate as a group in this 4 hour internet based conference call with Pierce Salguero. We will meet shortly before the conference call and will stay an hour and a half after to discuss as a group what we learned and extend the question and answer period, with an opportunity to present our individual questions to Pierce Salguero. Pierce Salguero is the author of many books on Traditional Thai Medicine, founder of Tao Mountain and the Shivago fund. In addition, he is one of the most talented instructors this school has ever seen. Truly, learning with Pierce is a joy.
